02 The Lift Equation
Everything so far compresses into one line: L = 12 ρ V2 S CL Density, speed squared, wing area, and a coefficient hiding the shape and the angle. This lesson is pure calculation. Work in SI units, state the unit with every answer, and round only at the end; answers are checked against a tolerance, not a keyword list.
Same air, full equation. With ρ = 1.225 kg/m3 , V = 50 m/s, wing area S = 16 m2 , and lift coefficient CL = 0.6 , compute the lift L = 12 ρ V2 S CL . Answer in N.

- Build it in stages: dynamic pressure first, then multiply by S , then by CL .
- At this speed q = 1531.25 Pa.
- Lift is a force, so newtons. This one comes out to about 1.5 tonnes-force, a plausible light twin.
