Read the lift curve in the figure. Describe how the lift coefficient behaves as angle of attack increases, what physically happens at the critical angle, and why "stall speed" is a derived number rather than the real boundary.

  • Up to a point the curve is honest-to-goodness linear: roughly constant extra lift per extra degree.
  • Past the critical angle, the flow stops following the upper surface.
  • A wing stalls at an angle, always the same one. Speed only enters because flying slowly forces you toward that angle.
